STCHERBINA TAKES ON TAG RUGBY CHALLENGE

Dragons star Marc Stcherbina is to be patron of this year’s Warburtons Tag rugby trophy.

Marc Stcherbina is to be patron of this year’s Warburtons Tag rugby trophy. The Aussie Ace, who has been recovering from a neck injury he sustained in the region’s Heineken Cup clash against Toulouse in December is looking forward to the opportunity to see some of tomorrow’s great players in action.

“I’m delighted to be able to play a role in this successful tournament, he said. It’s been frustrating not being able to play so getting out into the community gives me a chance to do something positive for the club and grass roots rugby in the region.

“Tag rugby is a growing sport and is a great way for kids to get into rugby. I’ll be on the lookout for the stars of the future at these games!

The tournament, run by the Dragons community team provides an opportunity for children in years 5 and 6 to play tag rugby against their neighbouring schools for a chance to play the tournament final on Rodney Parade at halftime in the Dragons end of season clash against Leinster.

Marc will be attending the knockout phases of the tournament as well as presenting the trophy to the winners on 16 May.

This year’s tournament in association with Uskmouth and Melin Homes will see 60 schools from all corners of the region compete to progress to the playoff stages. Last year’s champions Rogiet will be kicking off their 2009 campaign on 5th March at Caldicot Comprehensive School.

As part of their commitment to grassroots rugby, Warburtons are also bringing out a tag rugby kit for schools which will offer schools an opportunity to further develop the game in the region.
