Captain Williams looks to Sharks test

15/01/2024

Captain Rhodri Williams has called on Dragons to finish the pool stages of the EPCR Challenge Cup on a high – after another narrow loss on the road in Europe.

Jared Rosser grabbed a try and Cai Evans kicked 12 points, but it was Zebre Parma who battled back to claim a 20-17 win.

The result leaves Dragons looking at permutations in the final round of fixtures and knowing a positive result against high flying South African giants the Hollywoodbets Sharks could be needed.

But Williams wants the Men of Gwent to embrace the challenge and relish getting back on home soil as they bid to make it four successive victories in Newport.

“It’s a tight table and all we can do now is look forward to Sharks at home,” he stressed.

“We’re always excited to get back to Rodney Parade and we’ve had some good home form recently.

“It’s a game that can set us up for an exciting time in Europe. We want to finish this block on a high.”

Reflecting on the loss in Italy, Williams added: “We lost momentum after about 25 minutes.

“They were clinical when they came down into our half in that first half.

“We were disappointed we didn’t finish off some good set plays and that is the professional game. It comes down to minor details and those moments.

“We had our chances in the 22 and some attacking plays and those details hurt us.

“Credit to Zebre, they stuck in it and came out strong at the start of the second half.”
