Flanagan: We've got to spoil the parties

25/04/2024

Head Coach Dai Flanagan has called on his Dragons to ‘spoil everyone’s party’ when they face play-off chasing teams over the next few weeks.

The Men of Gwent tackle top eight chasing Connacht Rugby in the BKT United Rugby Championship on Saturday (kick-off 8pm).

Games against the DHL Stormers in Newport and Ospreys in Swansea could also have a big bearing on who makes the end of season play-offs.

And Flanagan has urged his team to produce 80-minute and rounded performances to have a big say in the end of season shake-up.

“First up we face Connacht, and they target certain games and we would be a game that I imagine they will try and target for five points,” he said.

“We’ve got Connacht who are pushing for top eight, Stormers who are pushing for top eight and Ospreys pushing for top eight. It would be great to spoil everyone’s party.

“That’s the challenge for us and one we can look forward to.

“Nobody should come to Rodney Parade expecting five points, and I am sure they are not, but they will be targeting it, and it is on us to prove people wrong.

“We’ve got to have a more rounded and more 80-minute performance,” he added.

“In certain areas, our kicking game and kick chase, it has been good.

“But we couldn’t keep the ball long enough (in Italy last weekend) and had opportunities in Benetton’s 22 that we didn’t take. We need to take them.

“We need to not give away cheap points, like the charge down and interception. They are easy points that we give away and teams don’t have to work for.

“Being at home in front of our people is something we are looking forward to,” he concluded.

“This four-game block is important, and this is the first of them. This is one of the most exciting times since I’ve been at the club, and we need to make the most of it.”
