Captain calls for more composure

30/10/2023

Steff Hughes conceded a lack of composure had hurt Dragons as they slipped to derby day defeat against Cardiff Rugby at Rodney Parade.

A tight and edgy BKT United Rugby Championship encounter – played in blustery conditions – was eventually won by the capital side to the frustration of Hughes.

“Credit to Cardiff, they made it difficult for us,” he said.

“We had a couple of opportunities we could have scored from, one with the forward pass and then when we dropped it over the line. On another day we score those, and it looks very different.

“I know there is some frustration from the supporters, but we are working hard, and we’ll get there.

“We were pleased at half-time when you consider the wind,” he added. “It was strong out there and hard to kick into, the ball was holding up a lot. It made exiting hard.

“A lack of composure second half made it difficult. We picked up some bumps and ended up with four second rows and two hookers in the pack by the end. That is difficult against a good team.

“We must look forward and look forward to a big opportunity out in Munster next week.

“It is frustrating to start with two home defeats. We targeted those to win, we could have won both.

“We’ll get there, in terms of composure and making things stick. It’ll change.”
