Woodman ready to build on Munster display

07/11/2023

Rising back row star Ryan Woodman is determined to build on his try-scoring full debut for Dragons – with his sights now set on Leinster this weekend.

Wales Under-20s captain Woodman made his first start for the Men of Gwent as they lost out to Munster in the BKT United Rugby Championship.

The 19-year-old capped only his third appearance for the club with a first half try as he latched onto Dane Blacker’s cross field kick to touch down.

And while he admitted the final score had been a tough one to swallow, he is keen to now look forward and to another Irish test this Sunday against Leinster at Rodney Parade (kick-off 1.15pm).

“The points difference was tough, but I was just thankful for the opportunity and hopefully people will see that I took it quite well,” he said.

“There were a lot of players missing and we knew going into it that it would be a tough challenge because Munster are a good team.

“Players will be missing again in the future so, as the younger boys, we will need to keep stepping up.

“With all the boys coming back for Leinster, with the Wales internationals bringing some experience, it will be good for morale.'

Looking to Sunday’s clash, Woodman added: “Attitude throughout the game will be a big thing against Irish teams because they like to play on top of you, getting gain line on gain line until you break.

“Leinster zip the ball around but will bring a similar game to Munster in that they can put the pressure on with their phase play.”
