No slowing down for speedster Dyer

18/11/2023

Rio Dyer has lived life in the fast lane in 2023 with his impressive form for Wales at the Rugby World Cup - but the speedy wing is showing no signs of slowing up.

The Wales international will line up out wide against Ospreys in the BKT United Rugby Championship today (kick-off 5.15pm) eager to continue his upward trajectory that has soared in recent times.

The 23-year-old might be one of the hottest properties in world rugby, but he is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

“Every game I go out to try and express myself. Some days I touch the ball more than others,” he smiled.

“It's just going out there and playing for the boys that are around you, playing for your team and playing for your badge and giving 110%.

“You need to let what happens just take care of itself. The main thing is just going out there, enjoy it and just take everything in your stride.

“Obviously as a collective, everyone wants to win, especially at home,” he added.

“We want to give the fans what they want. They come out in the rain, the snow, the cold to come watch us and giving back to them the results they crave is important. They take the time out of their day to support us.

“It's us putting our foot down, giving 110% and doing it for the fans and ourselves and then hopefully everything works out.”

Dyer needs no introduction to Ospreys – fixtures that have had a big impact on his career.

His late try in the January 2020 battle was his first score for the club – fast forward to October 2022 and his deadly double sunk the Ospreys in an epic league encounter at Rodney Parade.

“I’m looking forward to the game and it’s just nice to be back with the boys – I love this club,” he stated.

“It's a good vibe here and all the boys are positive so it's nice to be around it again.

“The Leinster game was obviously not the result we wanted. We went into the game going for a win. It wasn't like we were just trying to get through the game because of the team we were facing.

“We we're trying to prove something, and it was unfortunate that we didn't get the result.

“Now we’re looking forward to a derby. Everyone Welsh team and player loves a derby. I think emotions will be there and it's just putting right what we did wrong last week and trying to fix it.

“Last year the derby (versus Ospreys) was special,” added the Newport-born speedster.

“Getting a big win at home, there’s no better feeling, especially on a derby. It was a special time for everyone.”
