Flanagan targets derby joy repeat

17/11/2023

Head Coach Dai Flanagan wants his Dragons to replicate the performance that saw them stun Ospreys last season on home soil when the teams meet at Rodney Parade tomorrow (Saturday - kick-off 5.15pm).

The Men of Gwent tackle Toby Booth’s men in Newport eager to repeat the famous 32-25 victory when the teams met in October 2022.

A brace on that day from Wales international Rio Dyer – alongside tries from Bradley Roberts, Aaron Wainwright and a penalty try – saw Rodney Parade rocking.

“It was a great day at Rodney Parade,” admitted Flanagan.

“I really liked our energy that day and how we moved the ball. We need to replicate similar things this weekend to be in the game.

“We do take things from the pre-season game with Ospreys,” he added.

“In general, when we reflect on the last six weeks as a whole - the four league games and the pre-season games - we need to get back to expressing ourselves, enjoying what we do and backing each other.

“That is what we did well in both pre-season games, and that's what we need to look forward to doing this weekend.”

Ahead of derby day at home, Flanagan has urged Dragons to stick to the processes they have worked on and believes the right result is now only just around the corner.

“We’ve got to trust in what we're trying to achieve here,” he stated.

“We’ve had two games with massive missed opportunities. We're all aware that. They are games we would have liked to have won, but we were in both games.

“Munster away I thought our set piece was superb, our lineout maul, but a few system errors hurt us.

“Leinster at home, that two minutes cycle around half-time has a big effect.

“We have got to back what we are do and believe in how we're trying to achieve things – we’ve got to stick together, stay tight.

“It might not look like we're getting there, but we're going to get there.”
