Allstars fundraiser for MARIs Pamplona tour

10/08/2023

Five players from Dragons Allstars – our successful mixed ability provision – our currently fundraising to take part in the forthcoming Mixed Ability Rugby Invitation (MARIs) tour of Spain next month.

Dan Saunders, Rob Nicholls, Cerian Thomas, Karen Burgess – who is also part of the women’s coaching team - and Heather Nicholls have all been selected for the trip in September.

The MARIs are set to play two fixtures with the men facing Iruna Rugby Club while the women’s fixture is against the Navarra Federation.

The Mixed Ability Rugby Invitational (known as MARIs) was set up in 2021 to encourage mixed ability rugby players from across the world to play exhibition games against other established teams.

Tours have included trips to Ireland, Wales, England, and Belgium and allow players to experience the thrill of playing in an invitation rugby side - which they would not normally be able to do, as many cannot play for mainstream rugby teams.

A Gofundme page has now been set-up to help finance the cost of flights for the five Dragons Allstars. Accommodation and tour fees have already been paid.

The Dragons Allstars section - part of Dragons RFC wider community participation provisions - consists of both a male and female mixed ability rugby team. The teams were established to provide opportunities for disabled and non-disabled players to play contact or non-contact rugby together.
