Flanagan: We must back up home display

28/09/2022

Head Coach Dai Flanagan has urged Dragons RFC to back up the home victory over Munster - insisting there is too much quality in the squad to allow it to become a flash in the pan.

Dragons recorded a first home win in 17 months as they stunned the Irish province in what Flanagan admits was an emotionally charged day ay Rodney Parade.

The BKT United Rugby Championship action comes thick and fast with South African giants the Cell C Sharks next up on Saturday evening (kick-off 7.35pm).

And Flanagan has revealed how a positive squad is now determined to build on that display.

“The mood has been really positive this week,” he said.

“There are areas of our game that must get better at, but we were straight in the day after the game, and the group were very honest with each other about what was good and what wasn't so good.

“The big change is there is belief now. To get more belief we have got to be consistent and that's we've got to become.

“It can’t be a one-off, a flash in the pan. There is too much quality in this place and, like I said on day one, we have good professionals, so it can’t be a one-off.”

Flanagan now wants Dragons to look to match and exceed the benchmark set last Sunday and nail another big display this weekend.

He said: “We achieved what we did on Sunday. Nobody did it for us. We have shown that we can do it and we must replicate it, match it and get better week by week.

“We turned up, we fronted up when we needed to, and we showed a style of play that is hopefully going to suit us going forward.

“We need to nail this week,” he added. “We have put enough work in the bank, and we have prepared and recovered well.

“It was quite an emotional day around Rodney Parade last weekend for many people, with a first home win in such a long time.

"I heard someone say after the Munster game that it can’t be a World Cup final and we need to make sure we repeat where we were emotionally. It’s our home, Rodney Parade is our home and we’ve got to go and represent that.

I heard someone say after game that it can’t be a World Cup final. We need to make sure that emotionally we repeat where we were... That is what excites me and excites the squad...
