Flanagan: We will relish South Africa tour

02/11/2022

Head Coach Dai Flanagan will tell his Dragons to play fast and embrace the challenge when they jet to South Africa later this month.

After an impressive first block of fixtures, Dragons have a four-week break during the autumn internationals before BKT United Rugby Championship (URC) hostilities start again.

The Men of Gwent face Emirates Lions at Emirates Airlines Park in Johannesburg on Sunday, November 27 (kick-off 2pm UK time) before tackling DHL Stormers at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth (kick-off 12noon UK).

No Welsh side has registered a win on South Africa soil in the URC to date.

But Flanagan will instruct his side to play with confidence and pace as they tackle the two giants.

“The way we are playing now, we want to play fast, and the fundamentals of our game - our scrum, maul and our contact area - has been excellent,” he said.

“As long as we continue to play fast, it should suit us out there.

“We’ve got good athletes, smart rugby players. Our challenge is to go out and really get stuck into the South Africans.

“We’ll keep working on the fundamentals of our game,” he added.

“You don’t put a performance like the one we did against Zebre unless you nail the contact area, the speed of ball.

“It excites us going out to play on fast tracks – hopefully the sun is shining.

“But, more importantly, it is time spent together as a group. It has been week to week so far, and it has been challenging.

“We have stuck together, and we are really excited about what is coming.”
