Ryan reflects before season finale

Boss Dean Ryan has reflected on a ‘tough’ season for his Dragons as they prepare for the final curtain – but he insists it is vital not to lose sight of the positives from players this campaign.

The Men of Gwent tackle Emirates Lions a Rodney Parade today (Saturday) as they look to finish with a victory on home soil (kick-off 3pm).

The Director of Dragons Rugby has this week spoken openly about the difficulties faced this season and the need for change going forward.

However, he has also acknowledged several players who emerge from the season with huge credit after impressing for either Dragons or Wales.

Ryan said: “We can’t hide from the fact it has been a tough season. “We had early momentum to our season but didn’t get results when we performed well pre-autumn.

“We came back after autumn and never got momentum again. Having ten games on the bounce at the end has been tough.

“We can’t hide from that and can’t hide from the need to change. That’s everyone, from staff and myself to players – we have got to change the trajectory this club is on.

“However, it’s also important not to lose sight of people like Ben (Carter) and Taine (Basham) who have gone on to impress at international level,” he added.

“We shouldn’t lose sight of a Will Reed or Rio Dyer, lose sight of the core, a Harrison Keddie, Ollie Griffiths of Jack Dixon. Under a huge amount of strain, they have been there consistently.

“Sometimes it’s hard to get recognition for the good things that are going on. There are good people here working hard every week.”

Dragons have this week confirmed that 16 senior players will leave at the conclusion of the season and Ryan believes it is also vital the team finishes well for them.

“There are some people playing who are doing that for us for the last time and it is important we pay tribute to them,” he added.

“I’d like nothing more than to get that win for them, but we must make that happen. Preparation this week has been about making that happen.”
