Ryan to keep investing in youth

18/01/2022

Dean Ryan has vowed to continue to invest in the young talent coming through the ranks at Dragons.

Dragons announced last week that five Academy products – Aneurin Owen, Chris Coleman, Rio Dyer, Josh Reynolds and Luke Yendle – had signed new terms with then Men of Gwent.

Tighthead prop Coleman celebrated with what Ryan described as an ‘outstanding’ performance against Benetton Rugby in the European Challenge Cup in Italy.

The Director Dragons Rugby is eager to continue to provide a stable environment for young talent to excel in.

And he has pinpointed centre Owen and Wales internationals Taine Basham and Ben Carter as the perfect example of that at work.

Ryan said: “Aneurin has been a great ambassador of what we are trying to do, to create stability so youngsters can develop.

“It’s one thing throwing youngsters in, but if it is not stable, they will find it difficult to improve and you run the risk of being detrimental to their development.

“I’m really pleased that Rio (Dyer) is getting more exposure, Chris (Coleman) is getting more exposure, Josh (Reynolds) as well, in difficult positions too.

“We are starting to bear the fruits of what we want to do, and we want to continue to invest in that young group, continue to create stable environments,” he added.

“Ben Carter, Taine Basham and Aneurin Owen are all products of that, and they are getting recognised at the top level, which is pleasing to see.”
