Boss urges Dragons to back up derby win

22/04/2022

Dean Ryan has urged his Dragons to back up a winning performance in Llanelli when they return home to face Scarlets in the second part of a United Rugby Championship double-header.

The Men of Gwent entertain Scarlets at Rodney Parade on Saturday (kick-off 3pm) looking to complete a league double over the visitors.

Dragons secured a 38-27 win at Parc y Scarlets last weekend and Director of Rugby Ryan is eager for that result to be transferred back home in front of the Dragons faithful.

“I can only be proud of how the players have conducted themselves all the way through the season,” said Ryan.

“I’ve desperately wanted them to get more reward and there have been times that we have played well and not got that.

“We got it last weekend and we look at this one as an opportunity to see if we can back a performance up. We’re looking forward to playing at home.

“I didn’t think we played as well as we can play last week, I do think there is more in us,” he added.

“I went home unhappy with the way we played at certain times, and we need to control the game more when we’ve got those periods of ascendency.

“I recognise that comes with a bit of confidence and we’ve been trying to do that against the backdrop of not getting the results that we want.

“Hopefully the weekend is another staging post for building confidence that we can play better and can go on to control more of the game.

"Our discipline is still top of the menu. We need to take more ownership of that as a team and need to understand in any game there is a risk element, but we can’t be facing 16-3 after 60 minutes.

"In other environments we would have been blown out by then and therefore the rest of the game is irrelevant.

"We’ve got to take more ownership of that in games and now think it is just about one thing. It is multi layered and I think if we can get those conversations and ownership on the field then hopefully, we can get a better control of it."
