Waino pride at captaincy chance

18/05/2021

Aaron Wainwright has spoken about his pride after captaining Dragons in the Guinness PRO14 Rainbow Cup – and how he hopes the competition continues to allow young star at the region to impress.

Homegrown ace Wainwright led the team for the first time as Dean Ryan’s men battled Ospreys at Rodney Parade last weekend.

The Wales international led from the front but could not stop Dragons losing out 42-26 on home soil in Round Three.

However, despite the loss the all-action back row was pleased to see another display where the region’s up and coming aces shone.

“It was good to be named captain; a different experience and I’m proud to represent the region so it was a nice personal achievement,” he said.

“It’s not something I’d done at age grade level. Maybe for my club at local level, but never for the Dragons before so it was a good experience and hopefully I’ll get the chance to do it again.

“I spoke after the game and said we probably missed a few opportunities,” he added reflecting on the game.

“The breakdown let us down and that was one of the main learning points. Hopefully we can fix that heading into our next two games and be better.

“We said from the outset that this competition is a chance for us to give some of the more inexperienced boys a chance to play and try to build something over the next couple of weeks.

“Like we saw with Aneurin (Owen) getting player of the match, it’s a great chance for some of the boys to put their hand up ready for selection over the next couple of games and heading into next season.”
