Skipper praise for spirited show

13/03/2021

Captain Rhodri Williams praised the spirit in the Dragons squad after they mounted a brave fightback against Ulster to snatch a losing bonus point at Principality Stadium.

Rio Dyer and Jonah Holmes both scored in the final ten minutes of the Guinness PRO14 in Cardiff as Dragons rallied from 26-10 down in the latter stages.

Scrum half Williams admitted the side had also left opportunities out on the field – and pinpointed a series of attacks before half-time when they were held up twice over the line as a turning point.

But after a courageous comeback against another Irish province – Dragons battled back to take a point off Leinster last month – he was keen to look forward to taking late momentum into the next two games at the famous venue.

“Throughout the first half we mounted pressure inside their half, but they broke away and scored and then did it again with an entry into our 22,” said Williams.

“They are very clinical while on the flipside we built a lot pressure but couldn’t convert it. Not scoring just before half-time was a key moment that stands out.

“To be fair to them, they had a good defence and didn’t make it easy for us, but that attack before the break was crucial.

“There were a lot of positives to take from that game,” he added. “We showed that at the end with the way we have come away with a point.

“Coming into the last ten minutes, we would have pleased to get that point and that could be massive in the future.

“We have Glasgow next week so we will review that game, learn and look to put it right next weekend.

“The Irish provinces are quality sides, but it shows how tight we are as a squad that we have come back against Leinster and now Ulster,” he added.

“We’ve got to keep building and keep fighting until the end to get those wins.”
