Evans congratulates cap 300 Owen

21/12/2020

Record-appearance maker Lewis Evans has led the congratulations to Aneurin Owen - after the Dragons Academy product become cap 300 for the region.

Wales Under-20s ace Owen came on for his regional debut as a second half replacement at Stade Chaban-Delmas as Dragons lost out to Bordeaux-Begles in the Heineken Champions Cup.

It was a special moment for Owen, 20, and young fly half Evan Lloyd, 20, who came on earlier in the game make his debut and become cap 299.

And Evans, who captained the team in France, was delighted for both players – even if he joked it made him feel his age!

“I’m delighted for Aneurin and Evan,” said Evans, who has now clocked up 234 games for Dragons.

“It was funny because after the game I noticed on our name placards that we have got our cap number.

“Aneurin was the 300th person to represent the Dragons, which is a nice milestone for someone we all feel is going to be a special player.

“I then realised that I was cap number 75. I don’t often feel old, as much as people like to bring up my age. I’m 33 and still don’t feel it!

“But when I am around the likes of Aneurin and Ben Carter, our cap number 297, it does make me feel like the elder statesman.

“It was an invaluable experience for both of them,” he added. “Playing in a top competition (Heineken Champions Cup) against some of those players for Bordeaux it a huge learning for them.

“Hopefully, as long as they do learn from it all, it will be a good outcome for them and they can both kick on.”
