Coleg Gwent look to maintain start

30/09/2019

Unbeaten Coleg Gwent look to continue their impressive start to the new National Schools and Colleges competition when they visit Neath Port Talbot College tomorrow at Llandarcy (Tuesday, 7.45pm, kick-off live on Rygbi Pawb Show and S4C/Dragons Facebook).

The college got their campaign off to a flying start as they twice came from behind to beat Ysgol Glantaf 31-22 at Sardis Road in round two.

Glantaf were hoping to follow up their opening win over Whitchurch High School and made a flying start with back row Gwilym Evans scoring as they built up a ten-point lead.

Gwent replied with flanker Kyle Bailey bagging their first try, converted by Joe Westwood, before back row Sam Scarfe went over from a driving line-out.

A penalty from Josh Phillips just before the break meant Coleg Gwent were behind at half-time before a revival, led by hooker and captain Connor Chapman, levelled things up with 14 minutes to go.

Phillips took his match tally to an impressive 17 with his fifth penalty to grab the lead, but Gwent were in no mood to surrender.

Replacement prop Jack Powell crashed over before Gwent finished with a flourish as Chapman converted another driving line-out into a fifth try.

Newport High School are also back in action on Wednesday (October 2) looking to make it third time lucky when they face Whitchurch High School on home soil (kick-off 2.30pm).

Newport opened the season with a six-try defeat at the hands of Gower College before a first home game saw a 35-17 loss to Coleg Llandrillo.
