Dragons Allstars defeat Chiefs

18/11/2019

Dragons Allstars – our mixed ability team – emerged victorious in the Battle of the East as they defeated Cardiff Chiefs 22-7 at the Kings Head Cwmbran on Sunday.

With both sides by now familiar with each other, friendship was put to one side for 70 minutes of competitive rugby.

The Allstars got off to a fast start putting together some lovely rugby, with the pack punching holes in the defence of the Chiefs.

In cold conditions, both sides handling was exceptional and there were very few errors on show.

Dragons Allstars gained more and more territory as the half wore on and it finally paid dividends when Nye Hickman crossed for the first score of the game.

Immediately from the restart, Simion Hopkins collected the ball and linked well with Gareth Sullivan, who broke up the field and released Kelvin Miles to cross the whitewash for a second score.

A period of sustained pressure followed from the ever-willing Dragons pack and the pressure told with Rob Davies crossing for a try converted by Sullivan for a 17-0 lead at the break.

Allstars made changes at half-time but hit had little impact on momentum with Connor Rice making a big impression up front.

The Chiefs enjoyed a spell of territory and possession, resulting in a 70-metre score from the Cardiff prop - who also converted to great joy from the sidelines.

The final word went to Dragons as scrum half Gareth Sullivan went over, after all the hard work had been done by the pack, to conclude an incredible game of inclusion rugby.
