Ospreys a formidable challenge

19/03/2019

Forwards Coach Ian Evans admits Dragons face a formidable challenge at the Ospreys – and believes boasting a physical edge will be a vital ingredient to securing success.

Dragons defeated Ospreys 23-22 when the two teams met in a Guinness PRO14 epic derby at Rodney Parade back in December.

The two teams meet again at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 3pm) and Evans admits it will be a huge encounter at his former region.

“They are a formidable team and loaded with internationals and British Lions,” he said.

“Maybe they haven’t had as much success as they would like this season, but I imagine this will be the game they target to get back up where they need to be.

“It’s important for us to progress and it would be great to get a double and back to back wins over them.

“The Ospreys are physical and if you match that then you are in the game,” he added. “They kick a lot, but I think they will try and play a lot of rugby against us because they need that bonus point win.

“We matched them in Newport and credit to our 10 and centres, the gave us that platform to get into the game.

“It would be great to get an away win, but we can’t keep focussing too much on that. First and foremost, we need a performance.

“When we play away from home we have come unstuck and have let ourselves down. Our errors and decision-making has let us down.

“But we are focusing on that and if we keep our error rate down that will put us in a good place.”

In terms of his own role this season as part of the backroom team, Evans added: “It’s been a massive learning curve, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

“We have a hard working bunch and we are going in the right direction. We have the potential and you can see that coming through.”
