Outstanding Griffiths wins coach praise

Head Coach Bernard Jackman praised the form of back row Ollie Griffiths after his man-of-the-match performance over Zebre – and vowed to ‘give him every opportunity’ to win a Wales call-up.

All-action Griffiths, 23, made it successive man-of-the-match awards on home soil with another dynamic display.

And with the autumn internationals fast approaching, Jackman believes his back row dynamo is doing all he can to turn the heads of the international side.

“He was very good,” said Jackman. “He didn’t have any prep in pre-season and we threw him in against Benetton Rugby.

“We put him on the bench last week (against Leinster) because we need to protect him, but he is pretty exciting,

“There are a lot of good back rows in Wales. We want to try and give Ollie exposure at eight as well and some time at six. He finished the game (with Zebre) at six.

“We want to give him every opportunity to play international rugby and we feel he can do all three positions.

“We want as many players as possible to get into the Welsh squad. Twenty-two out of the 23 man squad were Welsh qualified and most weeks that is the way it is with us.

“Our goal is to try and win as the Dragons and try and get players into the international set-up. Ollie has certainly put his name up so far this season.

“He is incredibly powerful,” added Jackman. “He’s not very tall but he is very quick and very powerful.

“If you look at Exeter they have Sam Simmonds. He’s not big but he is pretty effective.”

Dragons return to action at Rodney Parade against Cardiff Blues on Saturday 6 October, 5.15pm. Early bird tickets are available until midnight Friday.
