Sarel Pretorius Goodbye message to Dragons fans

Scrum half Sarel Pretorius has confirmed he will return to South Africa to join GUINNESS PRO14 rivals Southern Kings next season.

The former Cheetahs and Waratahs number nine decided this summer was the right time to return to his native South Africa as he plans the next chapter in his career and life beyond playing rugby.

“I made up my mind to sign a two year deal with the Kings when we were out there a month ago,” said Sarel. “Seeing what I missed out there and also at this time in my career, it’s time for another new challenge.

“I’ve had a great time at the Dragons, made a lot of good friends and good memories, so I want to say thank you to all the supporters who have stayed with us through thick and thin. I’ve not seen such loyal support before. When we tour they come with us and they are always supporting us whether we win or lose.

“There’s a lot of good talent here at the Dragons with good young players coming through and prospects for the future so I think the team will do well under Bernard Jackman next year.

“I’m sad to leave as I’ve had a great time here at the Dragons, but I’m looking ahead and thinking about life after rugby, perhaps I’ll take a look at coaching and I have plenty of contacts back home so it’s a good time for my family and myself to go back.”

Jackman expressed his disappointed to see the experienced Pretorius, who has also made three appearances for the Emerging Springboks, leave the region.

“I would like to thank Sarel for what he has done for the Dragons on and off the field in his time here,” said Bernard.

“He is the ultimate professional and has proven to be one of the most dangerous running scrum halves in the Pro14 just like he was in Super Rugby. While we are disappointed to see him leave we understand why it makes sense for him and his family to move back to South Africa and we look forward to catching up with him when we play the Kings over the next two seasons.”
