Hibbard Expects 'formidable' Derby Test

Hooker Richard Hibbard expects a ‘formidable’ challenge when Dragons tackle his former region the Ospreys – but has vowed the team will take another step forward in the final Welsh derby of 2018.

27/12/2018

Hibbard will hope to line up against the Ospreys – who he represented for over a decade – when they arrive for Guinness PRO14 action at Rodney Parade on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 3pm).

And the experienced front rower is eager to build on the performance in the capital before Christmas when 14-man Dragons narrowly lost out to Cardiff Blues with the final kick of the game.

“I’ve only played the Ospreys once since leaving so it is always exciting to play against your old team,” smiled Hibbard.

“I have tons of good memories, lots of fond memories of the boys. They are a different team now with a few very old faces there.

“They are a formidable team when they have their front line boys out. With Alun-Wyn (Jones) leading and Tips (Justin Tipuric) is world class.

“They are finding some form so they are going to be a tough challenge. We know their threats. But we’ve got to concentrate on ourselves and go at them.

“I’m proud of our performance at Cardiff Blues,” he added. “It was massive when you think we played most of the game with 14 men and still had the opportunity to win it at the end.

“To lose it like we did was a bit gutting, but it’s about taking that performance and another step forward against the Ospreys.

“The derbies are always great games and tough ones. All three are bruising, but it is enjoyable.”

Hibbard is also determined to put in a performance for the home faithful back at Rodney Parade.

“It’s huge for our fans and we really want to get a win for them. It’s the last one this year so it will be a big game,” he said.

“We feel we have taken small steps all season, maybe a bit too small at times, but it led to that performance in Cardiff. Hopefully we can now turn into the team we know we can be.”
