Dragons take first step into new era

Dragons take their first step into a new era with an acid test against Leinster Rugby at a new-look Rodney Parade on Saturday afternoon.

Bernard Jackman will oversee his first competitive match as Dragons head coach on the brand-new Desso pitch against last year’s PRO14 semi-finalists. Former Wales star Gavin Henson is one of two debutants in the starting line-up, with South African star Zane Kirchner at full-back against his old side.

They are joined by Wales internationals Hallam Amos and Tyler Morgan in an exciting back-line, while Jack Dixon, Ashton Hewitt and Charlie Davies also start. Cory Hill captains the side from the second-row alongside Matthew Screech behind a front-row of Brok Harris, Elliot Dee and former Wales Under-20 prop Leon Brown. James Thomas and James Benjamin start on the flanks with Harri Keddie at no.8. And Jackman cannot wait to see Henson plying his trade back in Wales.

"Gav has been exceptional since the first day of pre-season," Dragons coach Bernard Jackman said. ”Every time he trains you look at him and go he's world class. We need someone like him who has that winning mentality and inner self-belief and talent to back it up.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing him play tomorrow. He has played one game in pre-season as he had a bit of a knock against Bath, so he is obviously not going to be at his best but it is exciting to have him part of this Dragons regime.”

Leinster bring a strong pack to Rodney Parade including new signing, Australia international Scott Fardy. The evergreen Isa Nacewa captains the team from inside centre, and head coach Leo Cullen knows his side will be in for a rough ride in Gwent.

Leinster coach Cullen said: “They’re a proud team and we’ve struggle over there in recent years. The Dragons are a tough team to play against and Bernard is someone who knows Leinster really well so it will be a tough challenge.”
