Worcester Warriors v Dragons Match Report

Newport Gwent Dragons lost out to English Premiership side Worcester Warriors this afternoon, after leading for the majority of the first half only to lose out in the second.

The Men of Gwent made the short journey across to Sixways Stadium in the hopes of turning their away losses into winning ways as they returned to the European Rugby Challenge Cup.

The Dragons struck first, at the rain sodden Stadium, through the boot of fly-half Angus O’Brien. He showed his skills by slotting a drop goal straight though the sticks.

Before long the referee pinged the home side twice showing two yellow cards, firstly to Sam Betty for foul play and the second was given to Christian Scotland-Williamson for a trip on Tom Prydie.

During this time Angus O’Brien doubled the Dragons lead to 6-0 with a penalty kick. Worcester’s own fly-half Connor Braid missed an opportunity to add three points but the kick went wide.

It looked like this score was set to stay going into the break however prop Val Rapava Ruskin forced his way through the Dragons defence in the dying seconds and went over, with a successful conversion from Braid

Worcester came back out of the blocks hard, almost immediately crossing for the try. It was wing Dean Hammond who showed his pace to cross for the home sides second try, with Braid missing the following conversion.

With Worcester Warriors showing their dominance they forced a penalty try soon after, with Brok Harris being sin binned for killing the scrum. Braid converted and the English outfit continued their pressure on the Welsh Region.

The Dragons bench was emptied seeing forwards Rynard Landman, Leon Brown, Elliot Dee and Sam Hobbs all come on, but the scrum couldn’t withstand the Warriors attack and soon enough replacement Leon Brown saw yellow too. With another penalty try and Stelling going over to go along with it, both of which were converted.

With the clock ticking to 80minutes a break from wing Ashton Hewitt saw him go over for his first try of the evening. His second converted try saw him chip ahead only to gather and dot down before the final whistle was blown.
