Welsh Schools Under 16s Cup Final

This Wednesday 22nd April 2015, Abersychan Comprehensive School will compete in the Welsh Schools Under 16 Cup final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

They will play Corpus Christi Catholic School from Cardiff. This is the first time for the school to reach the final and everyone at the school is excited about the event. To mark the occasion the school will close early on Wednesday and bus the pupils and staff of the school to the stadium to support the team.

Head teacher Mike Conway had this to say:

"Since becoming head teacher of Abersychan in 2006 we have had much individual and team success in sport. However, reaching the U-16 Welsh Cup Final and playing at the Millennium Stadium must rank as the finest achievement of them all. In the last few seasons we have had success at district level and come close in the national competitions. However, thanks to the hard work and dedication of P.E. staff Jon Watkins and Gareth Jenkins, and the commitment of our pupils we have finally reached a national final.

Although this is our first national final there is a link between Abersychan School and the national stadium. One of our former pupils, Mark Taylor, scored the first ever try for Wales in the newly built Millennium Stadium against South Africa in 1999. Our hope for the final is that several Abersychan players will cross the try line and bring the cup back to the valleys.

Rugby means a great deal to many people in Wales – in the Abersychan community, which extends from Pontypool to Blaenavon, support for the game is passionate. This final gives us a wonderful opportunity to mix that passion with success. I sincerely hope that the players from Corpus Christi and Abersychan enjoy a memorable game, but I’m sure people will understand when I pray that it will be Abersychan’s Caelan May who will be lifting the cup."
