TOM WILLIS TO LEAD DRAGONS AGAIN

Tom Willis will once again lead the Newport Gwent Dragons as the 2010-11 season quickly approaches.

Tom Willis will once again lead the Newport Gwent Dragons as the 2010-11 season quickly approaches.

It will be the third season in a row that the five-times capped All Black has captained the Men of Gwent and he has made a big impact both on and off the pitch.

The 31-year-old hooker played in 28 games during his first season at the region and 16 last year despite missing several weeks due to a calf injury.  Willis said:  “I’m very proud and happy to be captain of the Dragons again this season.  I have enjoyed my first two years as captain of the team.

“I’m looking forward to leading the Dragons and building further on the successes of last year.  From a personal point of view I think we need to improve our away record and maintain Rodney Parade as the fortress it has become.

“I also want to encourage all the supporters around Gwent to get right behind us again this year.  We really enjoy playing on our home patch in front of them and they make all the difference.”

Speaking of his decision to keep Willis on as captain, head coach Paul Turner, said: “Tom has done an excellent job as captain of the region over the last two seasons and I’m delighted that he has accepted the role again for the current season.

“His leadership qualities are top notch and I’m sure he will continue to be successful in the role.  Ironically his leadership really came out last season when he was injured which is testament to him.  Tom’s been a great influence within the squad on and off the field during his time at the Dragons.”
