MIXED BAG FOR GWENT DISTRICTS

Last weekend proved a mixed bag for Gwent Districts.

Charlotte Moriarty | 14/10/2009
Last weekend proved a mixed bag for Gwent Districts. With the Under 12s playing their game tonight at Tredegar RFC, the Under 13s led the way with a comfortable 20 points to nil victory over Pontypridd Districts Under 13s. Captain Matthew Donovan led the way with the opening score, and winger Gareth Jones made the score 10-nil at the break. The gwent defence, led by the backrow of Donovan, Lloyd Phillips and Mikey Herbert were superb throughout and engulfed any Pontypridd attackers that came their way. Second half tries came to winger James Scarfi and replacement Tom Davies. Man of the match, outside Jacob butler was superb throughout. This result highlights the vast improvement this age grade have made under coaches Delwyn Bainton and Craig Edwards, as they lost this fixture both home and away last season.

Unfortunately, the Under 14s weren’t able to emulate the younger age grade,a s they went down to a two try defeat in a 17-0 reverse. This was a disspaointing performance, especially after some promising rugby in their previous match against Caerphilly. Playing up th slope first half, Gwent were on the back foot throughout as Pontypridd dominated the contact area. The 10-0 scoreline at half time however was far from reversable, as the conditions would be with them in the second half. Unfortunately, the quality of rugby failed to improve, and the only performances worth mentioning were from two debutants, hooker Dylan Howells and replacement backrower Daniel Newman. If the reminder of the squad shoed as much endevour as these two players, the outcomes could have been very different. The squad in general will need to show more urgency and intensity as they go to a National 10s competition in Pontypridd on November 1st.

Dewar Shield
At half time this evening, all Dragons’ Dewar Shield sides will receive their new playing kits, provided by the Dragons.
Tomorrow however, two of these sides will go head to head. 11:00am at Pontypool Park, Pontypool Schools take on Newport Schoolsin what promises to be a battle of attrition. Pontypool Schools prop up the table at the moment, but will fancy the upset against a Newport Schools side who have yet showed their full potential. The most successful Dragons side at the moment is Blaenau Gwent, who having beaten North Wales and Pontypool respectively, sit second in the table behind Cardiff on points difference. Blaenau Gwent make the long journey West tomorrow to Aberaeron, where victory against Ceredigion will make it three from three. Islwyn Schools amtch against bridgend has been caleld off, and the final match is between Rhymney Valley Schools and Powys, with the game being played at Lewis Boys School, Pengam (10:30am KO).
