DRAGONS TO TACKLE KENYA

This summer a contingent from the Dragons will be taking the spirit of rugby to Africa.

This summer, whilst the rest of the Dragons spend well-deserved time with their family, traveling or just relaxing in the fabulous sunshine of south Wales, a contingent from the club will be taking the spirit of rugby to Africa.

The party will include players Richard Parks and Rhodri Gomer-Davies as well as Analyst Will Precious, Masseur Julie Harmer and Physio Dan Martin

The team will be visiting both Dagoretti High School and a local primary school for four days on the outskirts of Nairobi. At the primary school they will be helping with a building project to put a fence around the school, which will keep the children and the facilities safe.

In the afternoons, they will be going to Dagoretti High School to offer rugby coaching sessions for the local kids. Dagoretti High School on Waithaka-Kikuyu Road offers an opportunity for Nairobi’s brightest to reach their potential. Unfortunately, like most schools in Kenya, there are fees to be paid and with many children losing their parents to AIDS, their futures are often put on hold as they often have to leave school and face an uncertain future.

The purpose of the trip is threefold. Firstly to open links with rugby communities in less wealthy countries than our own, to serve the school community in Kenya through rugby and thirdly and most importantly, to try and make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged Kenyan youngsters.

There are a couple of ways people can partner with the trip:

Firstly, by donating rugby kit/clothing that they will pass onto the kids in Kenya. Children often play rugby without proper footwear, matching strips or protective gear. Old kit that has been outgrown or is no longer worn will be gratefully received and can still have a long life left in the right hands (or on the right feet!)
Any kit can be left in the club shop.

Secondly, by donating directly to the fencing project so that they may purchase the building materials needed to complete the fence. They are aiming to raise more than £500 but any donation, no matter how small can make a difference.

If anyone wishes to donate then please contact the Dragons on 01633670690.
