A talented young pupil from St Julians Comprehensive School in Newport has won the Newport Dragons Mural Magic Competition.

14-year old Sophie Szeto (pictured here with Dragons hooker Steve Jones and WPD’s Karen Welch) has won the competition run by Newport Gwent Dragons who invited budding young artists throughout the region to use their skill and imagination to create and design a poster illustrating a theme of youngsters and their involvement in the community spirit of rugby at Rodney Parade.

Sophie’s design will now be used in a mural which will be displayed at the rugby grounds where it will be seen by everyone who visits.

The competition sponsored by Western Power Distribution (WPD), attracted hundreds of entries from young artists in all corners of Gwent.

Sophie who received an iPod nano as her prize was pleasantly surprised when Dragons player Stephen Jones popped along to St Julians at their records of achievement awards ceremony to hand over a cheque for £200 which she also won for her school.

In addition Sophie and her parents were invited to attend the final match of the season against Leinster at Rodney Parade in May.

WPD’S Public Relations Officer, Karen Welch explained:” We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Dragons educational schemes. The standard of entry was very high but Sophie’s design really stood out, I am really looking forward to visiting Rodney Parade in the future to see her distinctive design on display.”
