SUMMER SKILLS CLINICS

Once again the sounds of youngsters enjoying their first fling at rugby is emanating from Rodney Parade.

The Dragons summer camps have kicked off, and under very difficult circumstances Community Manager Mike Sage is producing the goods!

This is the third year that the summer camps have been held at the home of the Dragons, and so popular have they proved that Easter camps were again organised this year. They were such a success that they too, will become an established part of our annual community service programme.

The difficulty for Mike has been that number one Development Officer Janice Chappell has had to undergo surgery on a troublesome knee injury that has kept her on the sidelines during the summer period.

Our Education Officer and ex-Newport schools coach has been celebrating his eldest sons graduation and on holiday, thus leaving Mike in splendid isolation as he manages the camps almost alone, thank heaven for mobile phones where he can ring Janice and Phil and get help.

Once more Mike has turned up trumps, the camps have been a roaring success, the rugby hopefuls, aged between 9 and 14, have met Dragons stars and enjoyed the run of Rodney Parade.

Mike has delivered a programme that is unique to Dragons summer / Easter camps and is designed to ensure the development and progression of rugby skills and sportsmanship.

Eager participants range from those who have played for a local club team to virtually newcomers to rugby. All agree that the unique opportunity to mix and meet international players, and to train alongside them has given them a fantastic experience, one they can treasure over the years to come.
