Over the summer of 2006, Caerphilly Rugby Development ran the first Adult Touch League in Caerphilly County Borough. The Rugby Development Officer aimed to establish a league that acts as a vehicle to improve activity levels for adults in Caerphilly borough.

The scheme was organised by Gareth Lewis (Community Coach) and he contacted over 300 local businesses as well as all secondary schools staff and clubs across Caerphilly. By targeting these groups, touch rugby was being offered to groups that may not traditionally have played rugby.

When the league began in early July, 9 teams of mixed ability and sex, registered to play. For 10 weeks, over 90 players participated in a friendly competition, emphasising that rugby is fun and can be played by all. All teams competed in an attempt to be crowned the first ever Caerphilly CBC Touch rugby Champions.

Finals Day was a huge success as players brought their families and friends along to watch. The winning team from Machen received a set of 10 touch t-shirts as well as the honour of being the first ever Caerphilly CB Touch Champions. The winners of the plate came from a local business and their team was primarily made up of footballers!

The Adult Touch League was a huge success for all involved as they improved their skill levels, their health and most importantly, their tans!

The Caerphilly CB Touch League will start again in Summer 2007. For those who are interested then please contact James Chapron, Rugby Development Officer, Caerphilly on 01443 863255.
