Waino ruled out of remainder of season

05/05/2022

Back row forward Aaron Wainwright will miss the remainder of the United Rugby Championship season after suffering a heel injury.

Wales international Wainwright picked up the injury in the home derby fixture with Scarlets at the end of April.

Following scans, it has now been confirmed that the 24-year-old has a stress fracture in his heel that will force him to spend a time on the sidelines in recovery.

Dean Ryan, Director of Dragons Rugby, said: “Waino will be out for eight to ten weeks and that looks like it will involve him missing the summer with a stress fracture on his heel.

“Ross (Moriarty) and Leon (Brown) are both nerve injuries and they are trying to recover. Leon has a shoulder stinger and Ross is ongoing with his leg. We are in contact with everyone at Wales on all these points.

“Will (Rowlands) has a shoulder issue and we are seeing some improvement. Elliot (Dee) is also working back into that space.

“It’s a significant amount of quality in a squad like ours with the challenges we have got in this run of fixtures.”

Meanwhile, Ryan has revealed centre Jack Dixon is a doubt for the weekend while there is better news surrounding back row Ollie Griffiths.

“Jack has been fantastic, but he has been struggling with an injury,” said the Director of Dragons Rugby.

“We tried to manage his week last week, but it clearly wasn’t right, so I made that decision at half-time (at Zebre).

“Sometimes you think you can get there, and he is such a crucial part for us, but it wasn’t right and it wasn’t being fair to him.

“He has got a problem with the plantar fascia at the bottom of his foot and I know from experience that is incredibly painful and irritating.

“How we manage that and how we get him playing is something we are working out now.

“We have better news with Ollie and I can't speak highly enough of him," added Ryan. "When we saw his injury we were really concerned, and so was he, that it was long term.

"To see him back this season is fantastic. His form and his commitment has been outstanding, so I can't wait to see him back."
