Dragons U18s Stun Scarlets U18s at Parc Y Scarlets

09/06/2021

A late fightback and a Sam Berry drop goal saw the Dragons u18s stun the Scarlets u18s at a wet and windy Parc Y Scarlets on Wednesday night.

Tries from Oli Andrew and replacement Gruff Davies plus two points from the boot of Joe Westwood alongside the Berry drop goal was enough for the away side to seal victory in their first game back for over 18 months.

Scarlets tries came from Evan Sheldon and Tom Zoogah with both conversions added but it wasn’t enough for the home side as they suffer defeat at home.

The sides will face each other again next week with the Scarlets travelling to Ystrad Mynach hoping to gain revenge following tonight’s defeat.

The Scarlets started the better side but it was the away side that opened the scoring with outside centre Oli Andrew showing his pace and racing away down the sideline after an interception.

It didn’t take long for the Scarlets to get on the scoreboard as their pack powered their way over after some sustained pressure on the Dragons try line, extras were converted and they took a 7-5 lead after 15 minutes.

There was plenty of talent and promise on show but neither side could find their way past their opponents for the remainder of the first half, despite Dragons being down to 14 men for the final ten minutes due to a yellow card to scrum half Che Hope.

The second half was much of the same but it was the Scarlets who went down to 14 with Caleb Salmon seeing yellow.

In a tight and nervy affair it was the home side who extended their lead with Zoogah powering his way over for his side’s second and the lead was extended to nine points following the conversion.

But a late fightback from the Dragons saw replacement Gruff Davies cross the whitewash after a lovely dummy to get over. Westwood added the extras to make it a two point game.

But the winning moment came just minutes later with fly half Berry calmly and confidently slotting a drop goal to give his side the lead and the victory at Parc Y Scarlets.
