Dragons Scores Tries for the Team and for Charity

As part of their commitment to the community the Newport Gwent Dragons have introduced a charity fundraising initiative this season called Charity Squares.

The Dragons have adopted four charities who they will support throughout the 2004/05 rugby season. One of the ways the club supports these charities is through Charity Squares. The in-goal area of the rugby pitch is divided into four squares with each square belonging to one of the four charities.

If a Dragons player scores in one of the squares then a local business donates £100 to that charity. Each match a different company sponsors the Charity Squares. The Charities are MS Wales Cymru, Noah’s Ark Appeal, NSPCC and Sparkle and were nominated by the players themselves. To date, out of the three home Celtic League matches played seven tries have been scored thus raising £700. Commenting on the scheme Commercial Director Gethin Jenkins said,

“As a professional sports club we recognise that it is our responsibility to play an active part in the community we are in. The Charity Squares initiative is just one of the many schemes we have to support the local charities in our area and we are glad to say the initiative has been met with a positive response from both local businesses and charities.”

Let’s hope the Dragons players keep on scoring tries and raising money for charity.
